To help fulfill President Gorbachev's vision of a modern hospital within Russia that could treat children's blood diseases, The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles from the USA, Britain, France and Germany sent large amounts of modern diagnostic and treatment equipment to the Research Institute of Pediatric Hematology and a hospital in Moscow. Including a flow cytometer, sonogram machine, cardiovascular instruments, ventilators and more, the shipments were sent in 1993 with a total value of $1.9 million. Another shipment sent in August 1995 was valued at nearly $500,000.
At the invitation of President Gorbachev and all the members of his new charitable organisation, founder Sri Chinmoy became an honorary board member of the International Gorbachev Trust for Children's Health Care in 1993.
Between 1993 and 1996, The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles sent more than $2.5 million of chemotherapeutic drugs and other pharmaceuticals, plus support equipment, to treat children with leukemia at the Research Institute of Pediatric Hematology.
We also participated in helping to train Russian doctors in the most modern and effective treatments against leukemia. We arranged for two Russian doctors to come to New York for training in the bone marrow transplant as part of their Visiting Fellowship Program in 1996.
A large quantity of specially requested food for infants was sent to a hospital in Ryzan, Russia by air in 1998.
After three days of almost uninterrupted driving the convoy covered a distance of 2,500km and reached Moscow on December 27th, 1991. This photo shows the trucks, containing $47,000 of high quality health food and warm clothing, in front of the Kremlin.
"During my years of service at the Gorbachev Foundation, Sri Chinmoy's aid was the most significant humanitarian assistance to the children's leukemia project in Russia."
