In early 1993, President Mikhail Gorbachev made a personal request to The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles founder, Sri Chinmoy for help in arranging treatment for a child with leukemia. Soon after that, President Gorbachev, through the Gorbachev Foundation Health Project, was instrumental in establishing the first modern bone marrow transplant unit within the Research Institute of Pediatric Hematology to treat children with leukemia and other blood diseases.
President Gorbachev then asked for urgent assistance in providing expensive chemotherapy medicines for treating Russian children, where the recovery rate of children with acute leukemia was only 4-5 per cent. The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles immediately began sending the medicines to Russia.
By sending large amounts of chemotherapeutic drugs, The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles assisted the Research Institute of Pediatric Hematology to improve the recovery rate to 70 per cent, as in Western developed countries.
Multimillion-dollar diagnostic and treatment equipment, medicines, hospital supplies, food and more have been sent—often in some life-threatening situations.
