Marakei is a small island atoll in Kiribati, this atoll has a population of about 2,500 people. There is no electricity, phones, running water or sewage system. All of the houses are simple thatched huts made out of coconut trees. We recently received a request from a Peace Corp volunteer for reading books, shoes and sports equipment. In late May, shoes, book, soccer and volleyballs were shipped to Marakei.
In mid 2005 we also received a request from another Peace Corp volunteer who had befriended a local Pre – School teacher in South Tawara. She was looking after a pre-school in one of the villages there. They had no stationery, books, toys or desks; she had a constant struggle to get the bare minimum of items to look after these pre-schoolers.
In late 2005 we were able to send a pallet of supplies to her. We received a letter back explaining that this teacher had tears of joy when she received our items, which included books, toys, sports equipment, stationery and art supplies. They had a formal ceremony with the elders of the village to offer to The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles their deepest gratitude for these much needed supplies.
“At my school supplies are indeed scarce. If possible, we would greatly desire books for our library. An old encyclopedia set would be fantastic... English reading books ... would be most helpful in strengthening our students English... sporting equipment .. The popular sports in Kiribati are soccer, volleyball and basketball. Durable balls for all these sports are needed along with nets and any used or new sneakers would also be highly prize
We greatly appreciate this opportunity to receive aid and hope that you and your organisation are doing well:”
