At the request of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, our international team of volunteers arranged for Kids to Kids projects to benefit the children in the Philani Nutrition Centres in Cape Town, South Africa.
A 20-foot sea container with school supplies, books, bicycles, toys, sports equipment and computers was sent in October 2003 from members of our group in Great Britain to the Salvation Army in Cape Town. All of the items were distributed to schools and comunity projects around the Cape Town area, the rural Vendaland state in South Africa and even the remote island of St. Helena!
In July 2004 a 20-foot sea container with 400 boxes of educational books was being forwarded to South Africa for distribution among African schoolchildren. Some books will be used in South Africa, while others will be delivered by volunteers of The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles to other African nations.
Vitamins, baby formula and baby supplies were sent to the Abba House Baby Shelter in Pretoria, South Africa, in August 2000. Most of the children at this orphanage have been abandoned by their parents and suffer from AIDS.
Air shipments of toys, clothes and school supplies were delivered from Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the United States in 2003.
Our group worked closely with a local humanitarian organisation to make large bags of toys for each of the children attending the Nelson Mandela Children's Day in September 2003. The bags contained a total of 27,670 toys and 11,000 art supplies. We also supplied 850 new airline blankets for the children.
This is an occasion when many of the brightest and most promising young children in the country come together to be in the presence of President Mandela.
When Sri Chinmoy and members of The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles visited South Africa from December 1995 to January 1996, we began collecting and distributing large amounts of clothing for the victims of flooding in the area of Durban.
In January 2006 we sent five sewing machines to the Philani Nutrition and Development Project in Cape Town South Africa. The sewing machines will provide training opportunities for women in the slums of Cape Town. The aim of this part of the project is for it to become financially independent to avoid health and nutrition problems of their families.
